Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Allergology

Background:

  • Allergic reactions to poultry are common, particularly to feathers and eggs.
  • Severe allergic reactions to chicken meat are infrequently reported.

Observation:

  • A 41-year-old male experienced anaphylaxis, including abdominal cramping, urticaria, and chest tightness, after consuming chicken meat.
  • Standard allergy skin tests for eggs and feathers were negative.

Findings:

  • Skin testing revealed positive reactions to chicken and turkey extracts.
  • The patient demonstrated a specific allergy to chicken meat, independent of egg or feather sensitivity.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the existence of isolated chicken meat allergy.
  • Healthcare providers should consider chicken meat allergy in adult patients with unexplained anaphylaxis, even without a history of egg or feather allergy.
