Summary

Spatial memory may be biased by viewpoint. This study found that recalling object arrangements from new perspectives was harder when viewpoints shifted laterally or forward, suggesting viewpoint influences spatial recall.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if spatial memories are also stored with a preferred viewpoint position.
  • To determine the influence of viewpoint translation on spatial memory recall accuracy and speed.

Main Methods:

  • Participants memorized object arrangements from a single viewpoint.
  • Recognition of the arrangement was tested from novel, translated viewpoints (lateral and depth dimensions).
  • Response latencies and error rates were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Lateral and forward viewpoint displacements significantly increased response latencies and errors.
  • Backward viewpoint displacement did not yield significant effects.
  • Lateral translation to a centered, canonical view also showed no significant effect.

Conclusions:

  • Spatial memory specificity is constrained by viewpoint.
  • Evidence suggests non-egocentric spatial information is coded in memory.
  • Viewpoint position appears to be a factor in the storage and retrieval of spatial memories.
