Summary

Paranasal sinus mucoceles can cause serious eye complications. Early recognition of symptoms like proptosis and vision changes is crucial for prompt diagnosis and treatment of these mucus-filled cavities.

Background:

  • Mucoceles are mucus-filled cavities within the paranasal sinuses.
  • Obstruction of sinus ostia, often due to chronic sinusitis, trauma, or surgery, leads to mucocele formation.

Observation:

  • A 39-year-old woman presented with a year of diplopia, a nodule above her eye, proptosis, and restricted eye movements.
  • Imaging revealed a large ethmoid sinus mucocele with bony erosion and orbital invasion.
  • The patient had a history of sinus surgery 9 years prior.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed an ethmoid sinus mucocele.
  • The mucocele caused significant bony erosion and invaded the orbit.
