Background:

  • Severe bladder dysfunction in children often necessitates surgical intervention for improved bladder storage.
  • Ureterocystoplasty, a reconstructive technique, has been utilized to address these functional abnormalities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the bladder function outcomes in pediatric patients following ureterocystoplasty.
  • To compare the efficacy of ureterocystoplasty with ileocystoplasty using videourodynamic studies.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 8 children with severe bladder dysfunction who underwent ureterocystoplasty.
  • Preoperative and postoperative videourodynamic studies were conducted to assess bladder capacity and compliance.
  • A control group of 8 patients who underwent ileocystoplasty was used for comparison.

Main Results:

  • Ureterocystoplasty improved median cystometric bladder capacity from 75% to 94% of expected values.
  • The ileocystoplasty group demonstrated significantly higher postoperative bladder volumes (290 ml vs 217 ml).
  • While ureterocystoplasty showed no significant change in bladder compliance, ileocystoplasty resulted in a statistically significant improvement.

Conclusions:

  • Ureterocystoplasty is a viable option for selected pediatric patients with bladder storage abnormalities.
  • Enterocystoplasty (ileocystoplasty) is associated with superior bladder storage function outcomes compared to ureterocystoplasty.
