Summary

Keratin and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) antibodies are more sensitive markers for identifying intermediate trophoblast cells than human placental lactogen (hPL). These markers aid in distinguishing intermediate trophoblast from decidual cells during gestation.

Background:

  • Intermediate trophoblast is a recently identified subpopulation of trophoblast.
  • Previous studies used human placental lactogen (hPL) and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) for identification, with inconsistent results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To further characterize intermediate trophoblast immunocytochemical features.
  • To identify more sensitive markers for intermediate trophoblast identification.
  • To differentiate intermediate trophoblast from decidual cells.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 88 placentas and implantation sites (4-40 wk gestation).
  • Utilized a panel of antibodies: keratin, epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP), alpha-hCG, and prolactin.
