Summary

Megavoltage radiation therapy shows promise for chronic vesicular hand dermatitis. This treatment provided significant improvement and durable remissions in nearly half of the patients studied.

Background:

Chronic vesicular hand dermatitis is a debilitating condition.
Existing treatments often fail to provide long-term remission.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of megavoltage irradiation for chronic vesicular hand dermatitis.

Main Methods:

Nine patients with severe chronic vesicular hand dermatitis received megavoltage radiation therapy.
A total of 15 affected sites (8 pairs of hands, 7 pairs of feet) were treated between July 2001 and March 2005.

Main Results:

All patients experienced disease improvement during treatment.
Complete resolution occurred in 47% of irradiated sites.
The remaining 53% of sites showed reduced severity or frequency of flare-ups.

Conclusions:

Megavoltage radiation therapy appears to be an effective treatment option.
This therapy may offer durable remissions for some patients with chronic vesicular hand dermatitis.
