Background:

Anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) abuse is increasing, even among physicians.
Physicians are not exempt from the risks associated with ergogenic substance use.

Observation:

Three cases of physicians requiring inpatient substance abuse treatment for AAS abuse are presented.
These physician-patients exhibited shared clinical and psychological characteristics linked to their AAS use.
Severe professional, legal, domestic, and health repercussions resulted from their AAS abuse.

Findings:

A potential
risk behavior syndrome" may predispose certain individuals to AAS abuse.
The study highlights commonalities among physicians misusing AAS.
Reinforcing properties and dependence potential of AAS warrant further investigation.

Implications:

Effective treatment necessitates understanding causative factors and co-occurring substance abuse.
Recognizing a "risk behavior syndrome" can aid in early identification and intervention.
With appropriate support, physicians with AAS abuse issues can achieve recovery and professional reintegration.
