Summary

Omental torsion, a rare cause of abdominal pain, can be diagnosed preoperatively. Computed tomography reveals a characteristic whirling pattern, enabling prompt surgical confirmation and treatment.

  • A 65-year-old male presented with acute right lower abdominal pain.
  • Abdominal computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a characteristic "whirl" sign of the greater omentum, with fatty streaks and vessels converging centrally.

Findings:

  • The CT findings were highly suggestive of omental torsion.
  • Surgical exploration and subsequent pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of omental torsion.

Implications:

  • Computed tomography is a valuable tool for the preoperative diagnosis of omental torsion.
  • Recognizing the typical CT appearance can lead to timely surgical intervention, improving patient management and reducing morbidity.
