Summary

Neck pressure during negative Gz exposure did not improve tolerance to subsequent positive Gz. This push-pull maneuver (PPM) challenge, even with neck pressure, reduced G-tolerance, indicating baroreceptor responses are complex.

Background:

  • The push-pull maneuver (PPM) decreases G-tolerance due to rapid shifts in acceleration.
  • Carotid baroreceptors are thought to be key in blood pressure (BP) regulation during PPM.
  • This study investigated if neck pressure (NP) during negative Gz (-Gz) could maintain positive Gz (+Gz) tolerance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if applying neck pressure during the -Gz phase of a PPM can maintain +Gz tolerance.
  • To analyze the effects of NP on BP and heart rate responses during a PPM.

Main Methods:

  • Ten experienced men were exposed to three centrifuge conditions: relaxed control, control PPM (PPM-C), and PPM with neck pressure (PPM-NP).
  • PPM involved 5s of -1 Gz followed by 15s of +Gz to visual tolerance.

    • Main Results:

    • G-tolerance was reduced in both PPM conditions (PPM-C and PPM-NP) compared to relaxed control, with no significant difference between PPM conditions.
    • Neck pressure altered heart rate (R-R interval) during -Gz but not significantly during +Gz.
    • Systolic blood pressure (SBP) during +Gz was significantly depressed in both PPM conditions compared to control.

    Conclusions:

    • Applying neck pressure during the -Gz phase of a PPM does not improve +Gz tolerance or ameliorate SBP responses.
    • The carotid baroreceptor response to -Gz may be counteracted by other baroreceptors (e.g., aortic) during the subsequent +Gz exposure.
