Background:

Power lawnmowers present significant risks of injury to operators and bystanders.
Rotary blade contact and missile injuries are common hazards associated with lawnmowers.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the experience with pediatric lawnmower-associated trauma.
To evaluate available safety recommendations for power lawnmower operators.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of pediatric patients (<16 years) treated for lawnmower trauma between 1996-2003.
Analysis of injury details, treatment, and outcomes.
Review of safety recommendations from six lawnmower manufacturers' manuals.

Main Results:

Fifteen pediatric patients were identified with lawnmower-associated trauma.
Direct rotary blade contact caused 93% of injuries; 46% resulted in amputation.
Most children required operative intervention, including reconstructive surgery, with many needing multiple procedures.

Conclusions:

Lawnmower injuries in children can be devastating and lead to permanent deformities.
Awareness and strict adherence to safety precautions are essential for preventing these accidents.
Manufacturer safety instructions consistently advise keeping children and pets away from the mowing area.
