College students have high tobacco use rates, with few accessing campus cessation resources. A case-based training program was developed for health providers to improve support for student smoking cessation efforts.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Health Behavior
- Intervention Studies
Background:
- High prevalence of tobacco use among college students necessitates effective cessation interventions.
- Limited access to campus health center resources hinders successful smoking cessation in young adults.
- Understanding motivational factors for seeking treatment is crucial for young adult tobacco users.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and implement a case-based tobacco cessation training for campus health providers.
- To improve the delivery of smoking cessation support to college students.
- To address the gap in knowledge regarding motivating young adults to seek cessation treatment.
Main Methods:
- A case-based training program was developed using student elicitation interviews.
- The training targeted campus health center providers and staff at 14 intervention colleges.
- Six case studies were created, integrating common themes from student smoking and quitting experiences.
Main Results:
- The training program was conducted during the 2003-2004 academic year.
- The program utilized qualitative data from 39 student interviews across 12 colleges.
- Common themes related to smoking, quitting, and relapse were incorporated into the training materials.
Conclusions:
- Developing tailored training for healthcare providers can enhance support for student tobacco cessation.
- Utilizing student-reported experiences in training materials may improve relevance and impact.
- Further research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of such interventions in increasing treatment seeking and cessation success.
