Summary

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels effectively detect early prostate cancer recurrence after radical prostatectomy. Digital rectal exams are less reliable for identifying local disease in these patients.

Observation:

  • This study evaluated 63 patients with elevated PSA levels post-prostatectomy.
  • Standard diagnostic methods (imaging, cystoscopy, DRE) were compared with anastomotic biopsies.
  • Patients with normal PSA levels served as a control group.

Findings:

  • Elevated PSA levels indicated local recurrence in 42% of patients undetectable by standard methods.
  • Metastatic disease was found in 6 patients, and local recurrence in 5.
