Background:

The relationship between Kernberg's psychodynamic model of personality organization (PO) and dissociation remains underexplored.
Understanding this link can enhance diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in mental health.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between personality organization, specifically Kernberg's model, and various facets of dissociation.
To explore the implications of these findings within the framework of mentalization theory.

Main Methods:

Utilized the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) and the Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO).
Collected data from 72 nonclinical subjects and 222 psychiatric patients.
Employed statistical analysis to identify predictors of dissociation.

Main Results:

The Reality Testing subscale of the IPO was the most significant predictor across all dimensions of dissociation.
Findings suggest a correlation between specific personality organization structures and dissociative experiences.

Conclusions:

Dissociation may represent a "pretend" mode of psychic functioning, characteristic of preoedipal development.
Impaired reality testing and psychotic experiences could indicate a "psychic equivalent" mode, as per mentalization theory.
