Background:

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) funded the ACES Project at Thomas Jefferson University's Kimmel Cancer Center to address cancer health disparities among African Americans in Philadelphia.
The project aimed to develop and implement community-based strategies to reduce these disparities.

Purpose of the Study:

To systematically develop and implement approaches for reducing cancer health disparities in the African American community.
To foster collaboration between a cancer center and the community, and to train investigators from special populations.

Main Methods:

Established a steering committee, expert panel, and community/clinical partner network.
Implemented outreach education and clinical trials education programs for community members and healthcare professionals.
Mentored four special populations investigators (SPIs) in cancer research and supported pilot studies.

Main Results:

Successfully organized a collaborative network and delivered targeted education programs.
Mentored SPIs who completed pilot studies in cancer screening and clinical trials participation.
Secured further support for cancer health disparities research and established community dialogue.

Conclusions:

The ACES Project successfully bridged the gap between a cancer center and the African American community.
It empowered community-based SPIs to adapt and apply evidence-informed interventions in cancer research.
Lessons learned offer valuable guidance for future initiatives addressing health disparities.
