During meiosis, chromosomes occasionally separate improperly. This occurs due to failure of homologous chromosome separation during meiosis I or failed sister chromatid separation during meiosis II. Summary

Women who conceived faster (within 6 months) had a higher likelihood of multiple births, suggesting increased fecundity in mothers of multiples. This indicates a potential link between shorter conception times and twinning rates.

Background:

  • Mothers of multiples are often considered more fecund than mothers of singletons.
  • Twinning rates may serve as indicators of population reproductive health changes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between time-to-pregnancy (TTP) and the occurrence of multiple births.
  • To assess if shorter conception times correlate with a higher probability of having twins or triplets.

Main Methods:

  • A nested case-control study design was employed using data from the US Collaborative Perinatal Project (1959-1966).
  • 8,546 pregnant women with known TTP were analyzed, with cases being mothers of multiples (n=81) and controls being mothers of singletons (n=243), matched for maternal age.
  • Logistic regression and discrete time Cox regression were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) for multiple births in relation to TTP.

Main Results:

  • Women conceiving within 6 months (TTP ≤ 6 months) showed a significantly higher odds of a multiple birth compared to those taking longer than 6 months (OR=1.95; 95% CI=1.09-3.51).
  • Analysis excluding longer TTPs (after 13+ months) showed a similar trend but with reduced statistical precision (OR=2.14; 95% CI=0.90-5.04).

Conclusions:

  • The findings support the hypothesis that mothers of multiples exhibit higher fecundity.
  • A shorter time-to-pregnancy is associated with an increased likelihood of multiple gestation.
