Adults rarely aspirate foreign bodies into their tracheobronchial tree. A 76-year-old female successfully had a tracheostomy cannula screw removed via fiberoptic bronchoscopy, highlighting patient education on stoma care.
Area of Science:
- Pulmonology
- Medical Devices
Background:
- Tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration is uncommon in adults.
- Foreign body aspiration poses risks of airway obstruction and infection.
Observation:
- A 76-year-old female patient presented with aspiration of a tracheostomy cannula screw.
- The foreign body was located in the distal airways.
Findings:
- The screw was successfully retrieved using fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB).
- Fiberoptic bronchoscopy is a safe and effective method for removing distal airway foreign bodies.
Implications:
- Patient education regarding tracheostomy stoma care is crucial to prevent such incidents.
- Fiberoptic bronchoscopy is a valuable tool for managing tracheobronchial foreign bodies in adults.

Sputum Studies II: Culture and Sensitivity
Sputum culture and sensitivity is a medical procedure used to diagnose bacterial infections in the respiratory tract and select the most appropriate antibiotics for treatment. This process involves analyzing sputum samples of thick and opaque secretions produced in the lungs and airways. These samples are collected from patients and then sent to the laboratory for analysis.
The test can identify various pathogens responsible for respiratory infections, including Streptococcus,...
