Summary

Extracardiac rhabdomyoma, a rare tumor, can be accurately diagnosed using fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). This early diagnosis avoids extensive surgery, as demonstrated in a submandibular rhabdomyoma case.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Cytopathology

Background:

  • Extracardiac rhabdomyomas are rare tumors.
  • Cytologic diagnosis is often challenging due to rarity and resemblance to other neoplasms.
  • Early recognition is frequently hindered by similar clinical and cytologic presentations.

Observation:

  • A case of submandibular rhabdomyoma in a 62-year-old male is presented.
  • The neoplasm was initially diagnosed via fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC).
  • The patient underwent complete local excision without radical surgery.

Findings:

  • Histologic examination confirmed the cytologic diagnosis of adult rhabdomyoma.
  • Helpful FNAC features and immunocytochemical results facilitated an early diagnosis.
  • Treatment complications were minimal, with no recurrence observed at 6-year follow-up.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a valuable tool for diagnosing extracardiac rhabdomyoma.
  • Early diagnosis via FNAC can prevent unnecessary radical surgical procedures.
  • This approach leads to favorable patient outcomes with minimal complications.
