Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Endocrinology
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Graves' ophthalmopathy is an autoimmune condition affecting the eyes.
  • Total thyroidectomy is a common treatment for severe Graves' disease.
  • Cerebellar lesions can cause neurological deficits such as gait instability.

Observation:

  • A 46-year-old female with Graves' ophthalmopathy experienced worsening exophthalmos and gait unsteadiness post-thyroidectomy.
  • MRI revealed a lesion in the left cerebellar hemisphere.
  • Surgical resection of the lesion was performed.

Findings:

  • Pathological examination confirmed the lesion as a dysplastic gangliocytoma of the cerebellum.
  • This diagnosis corresponds to Lhermitte-Duclos disease, also known as adult-onset cerebellar gangliocytoma.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The cerebellar tumor was successfully removed.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights a rare association between Graves' ophthalmopathy treatment and the development or manifestation of Lhermitte-Duclos disease.
    • It suggests the need for comprehensive neurological evaluation in patients with Graves' disease experiencing new-onset cerebellar symptoms.
    • Further research may explore potential links or shared pathways between autoimmune thyroid disease and cerebellar tumor development.
