Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Mechanical Engineering

Context:

  • Cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common procedure for hip joint replacement.
  • Ceramic-on-ceramic bearing surfaces are utilized for their wear resistance and biocompatibility.
  • Assessing the long-term outcomes and potential complications of ceramic-on-ceramic THA is crucial.

Purpose:

  • To experimentally and clinically evaluate the use of cementless, ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty (THA).
  • To determine the survivability and complication rates of ceramic-on-ceramic THA at five-year follow-up.
  • To investigate the influence of acetabular cup inclination on ceramic liner longevity.

Summary:

  • Experimental analysis indicated that a steeper cup inclination enhances ceramic liner longevity.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinical evaluation of 50 patients with ceramic-on-ceramic THA showed no post-operative complications, infections, or loosening at five years.
  • Patients reported no hip joint pain, a characteristic of successful non-cemented THA.
  • Impact:

    • Ceramic-on-ceramic bearing surfaces exhibit minimal wear and high biocompatibility.
    • Computer-assisted surgery can improve acetabular component positioning, reducing risks.
    • The study supports the long-term viability of ceramic-on-ceramic THA, challenging previous concerns and indicating a potential for lifelong implant performance.
