Summary

Episodic memory deficits affect 69% of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients, impacting encoding and retrieval. Disease duration, not disease type, significantly correlates with memory decline in MS.

  • A significant episodic memory deficit was identified in 69% of MS patients.
  • Deficits were linked to impaired encoding and retrieval processes.
  • While Secondary Progressive MS (SP-MS) patients showed lower scores than Relapsing-Remitting MS (RR-MS) patients, the difference was not statistically significant.
  • Disease duration showed a significant correlation with memory performance in the overall MS group, but not when analyzed separately for RR-MS and SP-MS.

    • Conclusions:

    • Episodic memory deficits are prevalent in MS and associated with encoding and retrieval impairments.
    • Disease duration is a more critical factor than the specific MS disease course (RR-MS vs. SP-MS) in the progression of memory decline.
    • These findings highlight the importance of considering disease duration in the assessment and management of cognitive dysfunction in MS.
