Elevated matrix metalloproteinase-9 associated with stroke or cardiovascular death in patients with carotid stenosis

Elevated matrix metalloproteinase-9 levels in patients with carotid stenosis significantly increase the risk of stroke or cardiovascular death. Combining high matrix metalloproteinase-9 with echolucent plaques further amplifies this risk.
