The ORTHO Birth Control Satisfaction Assessment Tool (ORTHO BC-SAT) is reliable and valid for assessing hormonal contraceptive satisfaction. This validated tool can be used in future research on birth control user experiences.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Health
- Contraception Research
- Psychometrics
Background:
- Assessing patient satisfaction with birth control methods is crucial for adherence and well-being.
- Existing tools may not fully capture the multifaceted aspects of hormonal contraceptive satisfaction.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the reliability and validity of the ORTHO Birth Control Satisfaction Assessment Tool (ORTHO BC-SAT).
Main Methods:
- The ORTHO BC-SAT was developed using literature, focus groups, and interviews.
- 339 women using hormonal contraceptives completed the questionnaire.
- Reliability (internal consistency, test-retest) and validity (construct, known groups) were assessed.
Main Results:
- The ORTHO BC-SAT demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.70-0.89) and test-retest reliability (0.79-0.87).
- It showed construct validity through correlational patterns and known groups validity by differentiating satisfaction based on symptom bother.
- Eight domains of satisfaction were identified: Ease of Use/Convenience, Compliance, Lifestyle Impact, Symptom/Side Effect Bother, Menstrual Impact, Future Fertility Concerns, Assurance/Confidence, and Overall Satisfaction.
Conclusions:
- The ORTHO BC-SAT is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring satisfaction with hormonal contraceptives.
- This tool can be utilized in future research to assess user satisfaction across various birth control methods.

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH release.
Hormonal Regulation
Hormonal Regulation
Hormonal Control of the Ovarian Cycle
Before puberty, the hypothalamus releases GnRH in a low frequency, low amplitude pulsatile manner. This along with the immature hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis activity, results in low estrogen levels and the absence of a fully functional ovarian cycle. At puberty, GnRH secretion increases in both frequency and...
Hormonal Regulation of Blood Pressure
Epinephrine and Norepinephrine
The adrenal medulla releases epinephrine and norepinephrine, catecholamines that enhance and extend the sympathetic or "fight or flight" physiological response. These hormones escalate heart rate and the force of contraction while...
