Summary

Younger maternal age, higher body mass index, significant weight gain, and larger neonatal birth weight are key risk factors for striae gravidarum. Teenagers face the highest risk of developing severe striae during pregnancy.

Background:

  • Striae distensae (stretch marks) are common during pregnancy, causing significant cosmetic concern for many women.
  • Previous studies on factors associated with striae gravidarum have yielded conflicting results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of striae gravidarum in first-time mothers (primiparae).
  • To identify independent risk factors associated with the development of striae gravidarum.

Main Methods:

  • An observational study analyzed 324 primiparae within 48 hours of delivery.
  • Data collection involved questionnaires and physical examinations, recording 17 variables including striae severity.
  • A pilot study in 1999 and a 4-month assessment in 2000 included 309 women after exclusions.

Main Results:

  • Over half (52%) of primiparous women developed striae gravidarum, with 12% experiencing severe cases.
  • Low maternal age was the most significant risk factor (P < 0.0001); 20% of teenagers had severe striae.
  • Other significant factors included BMI > 26, weight gain > 15 kg, and high neonatal birth weight.

Conclusions:

  • Maternal age, BMI, weight gain, and neonatal birth weight are independently linked to striae occurrence.
  • Teenagers represent the highest-risk group for developing severe striae gravidarum.
  • These findings warrant further investigation into the underlying pathomechanisms of striae.
