Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the multifaceted influences on General Practitioner (GP) behaviour regarding prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing.

Main Methods:

  • A postal questionnaire survey of 704 GPs in Northern Ireland was matched with a PSA testing database (22,207 tests).
  • Data collected included GP demographics, practice characteristics, training, and perceived influences on PSA testing.

Main Results:

  • GPs who tested men with a positive family history, unrelated complaints, or on request were more likely to perform PSA tests.
  • Full-time male GPs, those running 'well-man' clinics, and those in rural practices showed higher testing rates.
  • Awareness of national guidelines did not significantly affect testing behaviour; accredited training practices showed lower testing levels.

Conclusions:

  • GP PSA testing behaviour is complex, influenced by factors beyond national guidelines.
  • Dissemination and implementation strategies for guidelines need enhancement.
  • Local educational meetings represent a significant, underutilized influence on PSA testing practices.
