Summary

A large mediastinal mass in a cow was diagnosed as a mixed thymoma. This rare bovine neoplasm involved epithelial cells and T-cell lymphocytes, with adhesions to surrounding tissues.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Bovine Neoplasia
  • Comparative Oncology

Background:

  • Thymomas are rare neoplasms originating from thymic epithelial cells.
  • Mixed thymomas, containing both epithelial and lymphoid components, are less common.
  • This case presents a significant mediastinal mass in a bovine patient.

Observation:

  • A 25 x 8 x 3 cm neoplastic mass was identified in the mediastinum of a 10-year-old Holstein cow.
  • The mass exhibited encapsulation, multilobulation, and cystic characteristics with adhesions to the lung and pericardium.
  • Histological examination revealed spindle epithelial cells (pancytokeratin and high molecular weight cytokeratin positive) and scattered mature T-cell lymphocytes (CD3 positive).

Findings:

  • The neoplastic cells were positive for pancytokeratin and high molecular weight cytokeratin, indicating epithelial origin.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The presence of CD3-positive T-cell lymphocytes within the neoplastic population is characteristic of a mixed thymoma.
  • Gross, histological, and immunohistochemical findings supported the diagnosis of mixed thymoma.
  • Implications:

    • This diagnosis contributes to the understanding of thymoma occurrence in cattle.
    • The findings highlight the importance of immunohistochemistry in differentiating complex neoplasms in veterinary medicine.
    • Further research may elucidate the specific etiology and behavior of bovine mixed thymomas.
