Bioethics in Sri Lanka

Background:

Bioethics development in Sri Lanka has been gradual.
Ethics review committees are now present in many medical schools and national organizations.
Medical schools offer some medical ethics education, but trained teachers are scarce, and national research ethics guidelines are absent.

Purpose of the Study:

To establish a new ethical research culture in Sri Lanka.
To raise awareness among the scientific community and the public regarding responsible research conduct.
To develop policy guidelines for ethical research.

Main Methods:

Forming the Forum for Research and Development.
Implementing a bioethics initiative encompassing awareness-raising, education, capacity building, and advocacy.
Developing national policy guidelines for research ethics.

Main Results:

Increased presence of ethics review committees in medical institutions.
Initiation of bioethics education in medical schools.
Establishment of a forum dedicated to ethical research culture development.

Conclusions:

Sri Lanka is actively building its bioethics capacity.
There is a recognized need for trained bioethics educators and national research ethics guidelines.
The initiative aims to promote ethical, legal, and social principles in research.
