New matrix reference materials (MRMs) for herbicide determination in water show promising stability. A collaborative study found these pesticide-containing materials suitable for analytical protocol validation, paving the way for certification.

Detection of Regulated Ergot Alkaloids in Food Matrices by Liquid Chromatography-Trapped Ion Mobility Spectrometry-Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry

  • A collaborative study involving 15 laboratories was conducted to analyze the candidate materials.
  • Pesticides were analyzed directly from acetonitrile solutions, after preconcentration from spiked water on SPE cartridges, and after elution from pre-treated SPE cartridges.
  • Main Results:

    • Reproducibility was observed to be 16.1% for direct analysis of pesticides in acetonitrile (approx. 0.125 mg/L).
    • Reproducibility was 29.2% for water samples spiked with pesticides (approx. 0.5 µg/L) analyzed after SPE preconcentration.
    • Reproducibility was 26.7% for SPE cartridges pre-treated with pesticide-containing water (250 mL at approx. 0.5 µg/L each) analyzed after elution.

    Conclusions:

    • The observed dispersion values are compatible with the requirements for certifying these materials.
    • Pesticide-containing acetonitrile solutions and SPE cartridges demonstrate satisfactory stability and are viable candidates for MRMs.
    • This study supports the development of essential reference materials for herbicide determination in water.
