Summary

A 20-year-old man with transposition of the great arteries experienced syncope due to sinoatrial disease. He was successfully treated with transvenous pacing in VVI mode.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Congenital Heart Disease
  • Electrophysiology

Background:

  • Transposition of the great arteries (TGA) is a critical congenital heart defect.
  • The Mustard procedure is a palliative surgical repair for TGA.
  • Sinoatrial node dysfunction can occur years after TGA repair.

Observation:

  • A 20-year-old male with a history of TGA repair (Mustard procedure) presented with syncopal episodes.
  • The syncopal attacks were attributed to sinoatrial disease.

Findings:

  • Transvenous pacing in VVI mode was successfully implemented.
  • This intervention effectively managed the patient's symptoms.

Implications:

  • Transvenous pacing is a viable treatment for sinoatrial disease in adults with repaired TGA.
  • Long-term management strategies for TGA survivors require attention to potential arrhythmias.
  • This case highlights the importance of monitoring cardiac function in TGA patients post-repair.
