Summary
Tooth extractions in Kuwait are primarily due to dental caries in younger individuals and periodontal disease in older adults. Periodontal disease leads to more teeth lost per patient than other causes.
Area of Science:
- Dental Public Health
- Oral Epidemiology
- Clinical Dentistry
Background:
- Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure with varying etiological factors.
- Understanding the reasons for extraction is crucial for targeted preventive strategies and resource allocation in dental care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the primary reasons for tooth extraction.
- To analyze the association between tooth extraction causes, patient age, and gender in Kuwait.
Main Methods:
- A prospective study was conducted over one month in 21 general dental practices in Kuwait.
- Data on patient demographics (age, gender), number of teeth extracted, and reasons for extraction were collected using standardized forms.
Main Results:
- A total of 2,783 teeth were extracted from 1,604 patients.
- Dental caries (43.7%) and periodontal disease (37.4%) were the leading causes of extraction.
- Caries was the main reason for extraction in patients ≤40 years old (60.7%), while periodontal disease predominated in patients ≥40 years old (63.0%).
- Extractions for caries and orthodontic reasons were more frequent in females, whereas periodontal disease-related extractions were more prevalent in males.
Conclusions:
- Dental caries is the principal cause of tooth extraction in younger populations, whereas periodontal disease is the leading cause in older adults (≥40 years).
- Periodontal disease results in a higher number of teeth lost per patient compared to other reasons for extraction.

Teeth
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin and...

Tooth Anatomy
The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or grinding food.

Kidney Transplant I: Introduction
A kidney transplant is a surgical approach that involves replacing a non-functioning kidney with a healthy one from a donor. This procedure is often a treatment option for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. The method requires careful recipient selection, including evaluating various medical and psychosocial factors. These criteria vary between transplant centers but generally include assessments of the patient's overall health, adherence to medical recommendations, and lifestyle...
Kidney Transplant II: Surgical Procedure
Preoperative ManagementThe primary goals of preoperative management in kidney transplantation are to optimize the patient’s metabolic state and prepare them for surgery through diet adjustments, necessary dialysis, and tailored medical treatment. This phase also involves comprehensive infection screening and patient education about the surgical procedure and postoperative care to improve outcomes and adherence.Medical ManagementA comprehensive evaluation is required for both the living donor...
Imaging Studies I: Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder Studies
Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) StudiesKidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) studies are standard diagnostic imaging procedures used to assess the anatomy of the urinary system. They are commonly utilized for patients experiencing abdominal pain or urinary symptoms. By using a simple X-ray of the abdomen, KUB studies can reveal structural and pathological abnormalities within the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. These studies are particularly valuable in diagnosing kidney stones, urinary...
