Cellulose and Pectic Polysaccharides01:15

Cellulose and Pectic Polysaccharides

Every plant cell has a cell wall that protects the cell, provides structural support, and gives the cell shape. Cellulose, the main structural component of the plant cell wall, makes up over 30% of plant matter. It is the most abundant organic compound on earth.  Cellulose is an unbranched polysaccharide composed of linear chains of glucose molecules linked by β (1→4) glycosidic bonds.
As a cell matures, its cell wall specializes according to its type. For example, the parenchyma cells of...

Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Natural Product Chemistry

Background:

  • Polygomun aviculane is a plant with potential medicinal properties.
  • Understanding its chemical composition is crucial for exploring its bioactivity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and characterize the chemical constituents present in the aerial parts of Polygomun aviculane.

Main Methods:

  • Isolation of compounds using silica gel column chromatography and preparative silica thin layer chromatography.
  • Structure elucidation through physico-chemical evidence and spectroscopic analysis (IR, MS, 1H and 13C-NMR).

Main Results:

  • Seven phenolic compounds were identified: rosmarinic acid (1), gallic acid (2), gentisic acid 5-O-(6'-O-galloyl)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3), caffeic acid (4), p-coumaric acid (5), ethyl caffeate (6), and acteoside (7).

Conclusions:

  • Compounds 1, 3, 6, and 7 represent novel findings, being isolated from Polygomun aviculane for the first time.
  • These findings offer a theoretical basis for future investigations into the plant's bioactive potential.
