Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the clinical characteristics and outcomes of pediatric pelvic fractures.
  • To identify patterns of injury, treatment, and mortality in this patient population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of pediatric patients (age ≤16 years) with pelvic fractures treated at a Level I trauma center over 12 years.
  • Data collected included hemodynamic stability, transfusion requirements, interventions, and mortality.

Main Results:

  • Of 74 pediatric pelvic fracture patients, 14% had early hemodynamic instability.
  • 26% required blood transfusions, 18% underwent operative pelvic fracture fixation, and 58% needed intensive care unit (ICU) care.
  • Mortality was 5%, primarily due to hemorrhage and complex associated injuries.

Conclusions:

  • Pediatric pelvic fractures frequently involve significant pelvic bleeding and associated injuries.
  • These injuries often necessitate operative interventions and intensive care unit admission.
