Abstract:
This article provides a definition of diabetes education along with a review of the national standards for diabetes self-management (DSME), including a discussion of relevant content areas that promote behavior change rather than simply imparting knowledge. Outcomes measurement of DSME is reviewed, and information is provided on self-care behaviors as defined by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. A review of newly defined standards for outcomes measurement of DSME that are practical, feasible, and consistent across DSME programs is likewise provided.
