    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Radiation Oncology

    Background:

    • Cholangiocarcinoma palliation often involves radiation therapy.
    • Endoscopic delivery of radiation to the bile duct requires specialized techniques.

    Observation:

    • This case study describes the endoscopic implantation of iridium seeds within a nasobiliary catheter.
    • The procedure was performed for palliative treatment of cholangiocarcinoma.

    Findings:

    • The endoscopic radiation treatment resulted in a 19-month life extension for the patient.
    • No systemic radiation effects were observed following the treatment.

    Implications:

    • This technique offers a localized radiation approach for cholangiocarcinoma.
