Area of Science:

  • Social Work Education
  • Gerontology
  • Cognitive Impairment Research

Background:

  • Understanding student perceptions of elder memory impairment is crucial for effective social work practice.
  • Prevalent stereotypes about cognitive decline in older adults can influence professional attitudes and interactions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate graduate and undergraduate social work students' perceptions of memory impairment in elders.
  • To identify factors correlating with and predicting these perceptions.

Main Methods:

  • Survey administered to 172 social work students (graduate and undergraduate).
  • Statistical analyses included correlation and standard multiple regression.
  • Key variables examined: perceptions of elder behavior, communication, and gerontology coursework.

Main Results:

  • Approximately 70% of students did not strongly disagree that all elders experience memory impairment.
  • Significant positive correlations found between perceptions of memory impairment and views on elder behavior (r = .602) and communication (r = .630).
  • Perceptions of elder behavior, communication, and gerontology coursework significantly predicted the model, accounting for 53.4% of the variance.

Conclusions:

  • Social work students often hold generalized beliefs about elder memory impairment.
  • Perceptions of elder behavior and communication are strongly linked to beliefs about cognitive status.
  • Formal education in gerontology appears to be a significant factor influencing these perceptions.
