Summary

Objective accelerometry data reveals older adults aged 70+ exhibit significantly lower physical activity (PA) volume and intensity than younger adults. Nearly half of older adults failed to achieve sustained moderate-to-vigorous PA, indicating inadequate movement for optimal health.

  • Included participants (N=161) with at least 5 days and 10 hours of valid actigraph data per day.
  • Analyzed data using Caloric.Bas software and a custom Microsoft Access macro.

    • Older adults demonstrated 37% lower overall activity counts per minute compared to young adults (p < 0.001).
    • Older adults performed significantly fewer minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) daily (p < 0.001).
    • Nearly half of older adults did not achieve any sustained 10-minute MVPA bouts, and none met health guidelines.
