Matching unfamiliar faces is challenging, with significant individual differences. This study found that how people process familiar faces, especially inverted ones, strongly predicts their ability to match unfamiliar faces.

  • Familiar face processing (both upright and inverted) was assessed and correlated with unfamiliar face matching.

    • Moderate correlations were found between unfamiliar face matching and components of visual short-term memory, cognitive style, and perceptual speed tests.
    • Very strong correlations emerged between upright unfamiliar face matching and inverted unfamiliar face matching.
    • Strong correlations were observed between familiar and unfamiliar face processing, but only when familiar faces were presented inverted.

    Conclusions:

    • Unfamiliar face matching performance shows substantial individual variability.
    • Familiar face processing, particularly when faces are inverted, is a strong predictor of unfamiliar face matching ability.
    • Unfamiliar faces may be processed for identity using qualitatively different mechanisms compared to familiar faces.
