Area of Science:

  • Human Factors
  • Traffic Safety
  • Cognitive Psychology

Background:

  • Novice drivers exhibit significantly higher fatality rates compared to experienced drivers.
  • This heightened risk is attributed to an impaired ability to anticipate roadway hazards.
  • Current driver education lacks focus on developing crucial risk awareness skills.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a PC-based training program designed to enhance risk perception in novice drivers.
  • To assess the impact of targeted risk awareness training on hazard identification and attentional allocation.

Main Methods:

  • Development and implementation of a PC-based risk awareness and perception training program.
  • Utilized top-down views of 10 risky driving scenarios for training.
  • Evaluated 24 trained and 24 untrained novice drivers using an advanced driving simulator, measuring eye movements.

Main Results:

  • Trained novice drivers demonstrated nearly double the rate of appropriate visual fixation on potential risk areas or warning signs.
  • This improvement was observed in both trained and novel driving scenarios.
  • Eye movement analysis confirmed enhanced attentional allocation to critical road elements.

Conclusions:

  • The developed PC training program is portable and scalable for widespread use.
  • This program shows significant potential for improving real-world risk perception in novice drivers.
  • Enhanced risk perception can contribute to reduced accident rates among new drivers.
