Background:

  • Conventional lymphography is unsuitable for assessing joint lymphatics.
  • Articular lymphatic dysfunction can be evaluated using lymphoscintigraphy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess articular lymphatic dysfunction in patients with degenerative osteoarthropathy of the knee using dynamic lymphoscintigraphy.

Main Methods:

  • 38 patients with degenerative knee osteoarthropathy underwent dynamic lymphoscintigraphy.
  • 99mTc-labeled dextran (70,000 daltons) was used as the tracer.
  • Abnormal joints were compared with contralateral normal knees in 25 patients.

Main Results:

  • Abnormal knees showed slower tracer disappearance at 24 hours (86.5% +/- 3.3% retention vs. 77.1% +/- 4.6% in normal knees; p<0.01).
