Summary

Solid cell nests (SCN) in the thyroid, though rare, were found in various locations. Immunohistochemistry suggests SCN may originate from endodermal ultimobranchial body remnants, not neuroectodermal origins.

Background:

  • Solid cell nests (SCN) of the thyroid are uncommon findings with unclear origins and clinical relevance.
  • Previous understanding of SCN histogenesis and distribution was limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the distribution, histological features, and potential origin of solid cell nests in the thyroid gland.
  • To clarify the relationship between SCN and other thyroid cell types using immunohistochemical markers.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 2544 surgically treated thyroid and parathyroid disease patients.
  • Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining (thyroglobulin, calcitonin, carcinoembryonic antigen, cytokeratin) of SCN and surrounding tissue.

  • Microcysts within SCN contained acidic proteoglycan; calcitonin-positive cells were observed adjacent to SCN.

  • Findings suggest SCN are associated with ultimobranchial body vestiges of endodermal origin, rather than neuroectodermal origins.
