Malignant fibrous histiocytoma.

J P Hughes, N L Mills, R C Lynch

    Southern Medical Journal
    |October 1, 1975

    Summary

Malignant fibrous histiocytomas are skin and soft tissue tumors characterized by a firm, solitary mass. Wide excision is the treatment, but local recurrence is common, and metastasis indicates a poor prognosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Oncology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a rare soft tissue tumor.
    • Understanding its presentation and behavior is crucial for patient outcomes.

    Observation:

    • Presents as a solitary, firm mass (0.5-12.0 cm) with skin fixation.
    • Microscopically shows intermingled histiocytes, giant cells, and fibroblasts in a whirling pattern within fibrous stroma.

    Findings:

    • Wide excision with skin grafting is the standard treatment.
    • Local recurrence rates are high following surgical intervention.
    • Metastasis, though less common, significantly worsens the prognosis.

    Implications:

    • Early diagnosis and complete surgical removal are essential.
    • Close monitoring for recurrence is necessary post-treatment.
    • Further research into MFH metastasis may improve long-term survival rates.
