Summary

Infrabony defect width in severe periodontitis was not significantly different with or without a neighboring tooth. Defect angle, however, correlated with infrabony defect depth.

Area of Science:

  • Periodontology
  • Oral Radiology
  • Dental Morphology

Background:

  • Infrabony defects are a common feature in severe periodontitis.
  • Understanding the dimensions of these defects is crucial for treatment planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the defect width of infrabony defects.
  • To determine if infrabony defect width correlates with defect depth.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study analyzing digitized intra-oral radiographs of patients with severe periodontitis.
  • Measurement of infrabony defect depth, width, defect angle, and interdental space width.

Main Results:

  • Infrabony defects were more prevalent in the mandible and at mesial sites.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No statistically significant difference in defect width was found between sites with and without a neighboring tooth.
  • Narrow defect angles were associated with deep infrabony defects.
  • Conclusions:

    • Defect angle is dependent on defect depth.
    • Infrabony defect width is not influenced by the presence or absence of a neighboring tooth.
    • Infrabony defects occur in a minority of teeth even in severe periodontitis.
