Computerized Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CCBT) is effective for anxiety and depression in routine care. This study confirms its generalizability, showing significant improvements maintained at six months.
Area of Science:
- Mental Health
- Digital Therapeutics
- Psychiatry
Background:
- Computerized Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CCBT) has shown efficacy in controlled trials.
- The generalizability of CCBT in routine care settings requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To test the generalizability of a CCBT package (Beating the Blues) in a naturalistic, non-randomized trial.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of CCBT as a first-line treatment for common mental health issues.
Main Methods:
- 219 patients with anxiety/depression received CCBT in routine care.
- Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation-Outcome Measure (CORE-OM) and Work and Social Adjustment scale (WSA) were used for assessment.
- Self-report measures of anxiety and depression were collected during treatment sessions and at 6-month follow-up.
Main Results:
- Statistically and clinically significant improvements were observed in CORE-OM, WSA, and self-reported anxiety/depression.
- Intention-to-treat analysis showed an average 0.29-point drop on CORE-OM (effect size 0.50).
- Benefits were maintained at 6-month follow-up in 18% of completers.
Conclusions:
- CCBT is an effective first-line intervention for common mental health problems.
- CCBT can be successfully integrated into stepped care frameworks.
- Digital mental health interventions show promise for widespread application.
