Higher levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) are linked to poorer recovery of lower extremity function after hip fracture in older women. This suggests inflammation plays a key role in post-fracture functional decline.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and functional recovery after hip fracture in older women.
  • To determine if the degree of inflammatory response correlates with adverse functional outcomes.

  • A cohort of women aged 65+ with hip fractures were assessed at multiple time points post-fracture.
  • Serum IL-6 levels and lower extremity function (using the Lower Extremity Gain Scale - LEGS) were measured.
