Summary

CDB-2914 is a new progesterone receptor modulator that is as effective as levonorgestrel for emergency contraception. Both methods had similar side effect profiles, with some variation in menstrual cycles.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy and adverse effects of CDB-2914, a novel progesterone receptor modulator, with levonorgestrel for emergency contraception.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, double-blinded noninferiority trial.
  • Healthy women seeking EC within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse were enrolled.
  • Participants received either CDB-2914 or levonorgestrel, with follow-up to assess pregnancy and adverse events.

Main Results:

  • Pregnancy occurred in 0.9% of CDB-2914 users and 1.7% of levonorgestrel users.
  • CDB-2914 averted 85% of anticipated pregnancies, compared to 69% for levonorgestrel.
