Background:

  • Sympathetic nervous system activity, a component of the stress response, is reflected in heart rate variability (HRV).
  • Intima media thickness (IMT) is a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and intima media thickness (IMT).
  • To explore HRV as a potential indicator linking psychological strain to atherosclerosis development.

Main Methods:

  • Measurements of HRV were taken during a stress test and sleep in 78 participants in 2002.
  • IMT was measured in 2002, and IMT progression from 1998 to 2002 was analyzed.
  • Associations between HRV parameters and IMT/IMT progression were examined.

Main Results:

  • HRV demonstrated a negative association with both IMT and IMT progression during both stress test and sleep conditions.
  • In men with higher than average IMT, the low frequency-high frequency ratio during sleep was elevated compared to the stress test, suggesting impaired recovery.
  • Consistent negative correlations were observed between HRV and IMT/IMT progression.

Conclusions:

  • HRV is negatively associated with intima media thickness and its progression.
  • Reduced HRV may be implicated in the pathophysiological pathway from psychological stress to atherosclerosis.
  • HRV could serve as a biomarker for cardiovascular risk associated with stress.
