We introduce a topographic map metaphor for visualizing Internet prefix propagation, highlighting Internet Service Provider (ISP) importance in routing. This method enhances the widely used BGPlay service for network monitoring.
Area of Science:
- Computer Science
- Network Engineering
- Data Visualization
Background:
- Internet routing complexity necessitates effective visualization tools.
- Current methods for visualizing prefix propagation lack clarity on Internet Service Provider (ISP) influence.
- The BGPlay service is a widely adopted tool for Internet routing monitoring.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a novel metaphor for visualizing Internet prefix propagation.
- To enhance the understanding of relative Internet Service Provider (ISP) importance in routing.
- To develop and test an algorithm for computing layouts based on the new metaphor.
Main Methods:
- Development of a new visualization metaphor based on topographic maps.
- Algorithm design for computing network layouts reflecting prefix propagation.
- Experimental evaluation using a real-world Internet data suite.
Main Results:
- The topographic map metaphor effectively visualizes prefix propagation.
- The proposed algorithm generates informative layouts highlighting ISP roles.
- Demonstrated extension and improvement of the BGPlay service visualization capabilities.
Conclusions:
- The topographic map metaphor offers a powerful new approach to visualizing Internet routing.
- The developed algorithm provides practical insights into ISP importance.
- This work enhances network monitoring tools for Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

Propagation of Action Potentials
Neurons (nerve cells) have a resting membrane potential, with a slightly negative charge inside compared to outside. This is maintained by ion channels, such as sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) channels, which control the flow of ions. When a stimulus, like a touch or a signal from another neuron, triggers the neuron, sodium channels open, allowing sodium ions to...
Propagation of Waves
Consider a scenario where a wave propagates from a string of low linear mass density to a string of high linear mass density. In such a case, the reflected wave is out of phase with respect to the incident wave, however the...
Interference: Path Lengths
Two special sources may be considered when they are in phase. This can be easily achieved by feeding the two sources from the same source. An example would be synchronizing the two speakers by feeding them with the same source, such as the sound waves produced by a tuning fork. This setup ensures that the two sources have the same frequency and are...
