Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate alcohol consumption and binge drinking prevalence before and during early pregnancy.
  • To identify factors associated with alcohol use and binge drinking during pregnancy.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal questionnaire study was conducted with a representative sample of pregnant women in Oslo, Norway.
  • Data collected included T-ACE screening, alcohol frequency, Standard Units (SU) per occasion, SU/week, and binge drinking (>or=5 SU per occasion).
  • Statistical analyses included binary logistic regression, Student's t-test, and Pearson's chi square.

Main Results:

  • 89% reported alcohol use pre-pregnancy, decreasing to 23% after week 12. Binge drinking was reported by 59% pre-pregnancy and 25% in early pregnancy (weeks 0-6).
  • 85% altered drinking patterns upon pregnancy recognition, even if the pregnancy was planned for fetal welfare.
  • Alcohol use during pregnancy was associated with older age, smoking, higher pre-pregnancy SU/week, anxiety, higher income, and partner's education; however, only smoking and T-ACE positivity predicted binge drinking.

Conclusions:

  • A significant proportion of women exhibit pre-pregnancy alcohol consumption patterns that may pose risks to fetal development.
  • Early pregnancy drinking and binge drinking are prevalent, highlighting the need for targeted interventions.
  • Factors like smoking and risk screening (T-ACE) are key predictors of high-risk drinking behaviors during pregnancy.
