  • Altered dopaminergic functioning in GSP suggests potential striatal dysfunction.
  • This is the first fMRI study to investigate GSP using a striatum-engaging cognitive task.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine neural correlates of GSP using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
  • To compare striatal activation in GSP subjects versus healthy controls during a cognitive task.
  • To investigate the role of the striatum in the neurobiology of GSP.

Main Methods:

  • fMRI was used to scan 10 unmedicated GSP subjects and 10 healthy controls.
  • Participants performed an implicit sequence learning task known to activate striatal regions.
  • Subjects were matched for age, gender, and education.

  • Behavioral performance on the task did not differ significantly between GSP and control groups.
  • GSP subjects showed significantly reduced neural activation in the left caudate head, left inferior parietal lobe, and bilateral insula.
