Summary

Cardiac metastases, or tumours spreading to the heart, are under-researched. While primary heart tumours are rare, secondary cardiac tumours are more common than previously thought, with incidences ranging from 2.3% to 18.3%.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Cardiology

Background:

  • Cardiac metastases are a poorly understood oncological issue.
  • Primary cardiac tumours are rare (0.001%-0.28%), but secondary tumours can arise from any distant malignancy.
  • Cardiac metastases are often considered rare, but incidence increases significantly when specifically investigated (2.3%-18.3%).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and clinical presentation of cardiac metastases.
  • To characterize the pathological features of cardiac metastatic lesions.
  • To highlight the under-recognized incidence of secondary tumours in the heart.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of existing literature on cardiac metastases.
  • Analysis of epidemiological data and reported incidence rates.
  • Pathological examination and characterization of metastatic cardiac lesions.

Main Results:

  • While no specific cancer preferentially metastasizes to the heart, melanoma and mediastinal tumours are more frequent culprits.
  • The incidence of cardiac metastases, when actively sought, is higher than generally assumed.
  • The review covers pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical presentation, and pathology of these secondary heart tumours.

Conclusions:

  • Cardiac metastases are a significant oncological finding, more common than often perceived.
  • Understanding the epidemiology and pathology is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.
  • Further systematic studies are needed to fully elucidate the impact of cardiac metastases.
