Summary

Schistosoma mansoni infection significantly alters liver protein expression, reducing proteins vital for normal liver function and increasing stress-related proteins. These changes may serve as new biomarkers for schistosomiasis disease.

Area of Science:

  • Proteomics
  • Immunology
  • Hepatology

Background:

  • Schistosoma mansoni infection triggers an initial protective granulomatous response in the liver.
  • Chronic infection progresses to liver fibrosis, impacting liver function.
  • Understanding molecular changes in the liver during schistosomiasis is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of acute schistosomiasis on liver protein expression.
  • To identify proteins altered during schistosome infection using a proteomic approach.

Main Methods:

  • Proteomic analysis of liver tissue from infected mice 8 weeks postinfection.
  • Mass fingerprinting to identify differentially expressed proteins.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Schistosome infection significantly reduced proteins involved in the citric acid cycle, fatty acid cycle, and urea cycle.
  • Increased abundance of proteins related to stress responses, acute phase reactants, and structural components.
  • Altered expression patterns of immunity-related proteins like peroxiredoxin 1, arginase 1, and galectin 1.

Conclusions:

  • Acute schistosomiasis profoundly impacts specific liver functions at the proteomic level.
  • Altered protein isoforms and upregulated unique proteins show potential as novel disease markers for schistosomiasis.
